Symbolplus’ Tokyo Office Is an Ode to Warmth and Natural Rhythm

tokyo

Experience a workspace that merges traditional craftsmanship with modern functionality.

Thoughtful Integration of Natural Materials

Design practice Symbolplus has renovated its Tokyo office within a timber-framed building designed by architect Akio Hayashi. The project preserves the original structure while emphasizing natural materials. Earthen plaster blended with Ishikawa red soil coats walls and exposed staircases, complementing the timber’s warm tones and adding tactile depth to the interior.

Innovative Use of Washi Paper

Washi paper screens and panels enhance the office’s flexibility and durability while creating atmospheric light effects. Sliding shoji screens conceal timber shelving, and layered Washi ceiling panels cast dynamic shadows over angular furniture, demonstrating an inventive approach to traditional materials.

Balancing Functionality and Tradition

The interiors are modest yet deeply considered, with communal desks, movable partitions, and adaptable seating areas that respect the building’s historical rhythm. Symbolplus’ thoughtful interventions create a contemporary office that harmonizes with its heritage while providing a functional, serene workspace.
