A design led cultural retreat blends craftsmanship, cuisine and calm at the gateway to Itsukushima Shrine.

A Cultural Sanctuary Rooted in Place

Opening in March 2026, HOTEL FORK & KNIFE Miyajima introduces a refined hospitality concept at the entrance to the UNESCO listed Itsukushima Shrine. Conceived under the theme Tradition Served Quietly, the 34 room retreat unfolds across a 2,400 square meter site, offering an intimate alternative to conventional luxury resorts.

Designed by architect and artist Fumihiko Sano, the property centers on natural materials and spatial restraint. Cedar and cypress shape the interiors, while artisanal detailing reinforces a distinctly Japanese sensibility softened by contemporary refinement. The result is a sanctuary that feels both grounded in heritage and attuned to modern comfort.

Wellness and Craft in Harmony

Beyond its guestrooms, the hotel integrates spaces dedicated to reflection and restoration. A heritage library and curated select shop encourage cultural immersion, while a natural onsen, sauna and fitness gym support physical renewal. Each amenity is thoughtfully integrated, reinforcing the retreat’s emphasis on balance and intentional living.

Firewood Cooking and Local Gastronomy

Dining forms the heart of the HOTEL FORK & KNIFE experience. Led by chef Aya Ishihama, the signature restaurant highlights seasonal ingredients sourced from the mountains and waters of the Seto Inland Sea. Firewood cooking enhances depth and texture, while freshly milled rice prepared in donabe pots anchors the menu in regional tradition.

A bar lounge complements the culinary program with curated local sake and wines, and the in house ref. Miyajima shop showcases artisanal goods selected in collaboration with Hiroshima’s renowned ref. boutique. Together, design and gastronomy converge to create a stay that is both restorative and culturally immersive, offering guests a quiet yet deeply considered encounter with Miyajima’s enduring spirit.
