In Montréal, a new bathhouse blends precision, materiality, and ritual into a communal wellness experience.
An Industrial Setting for Modern Ritual
Located in Montréal’s Griffintown neighborhood, Recess Thermal Station introduces a refined approach to communal bathing within an industrial shell. Designed by Future Simple Studio and developed by wellness brand Recess, the space pairs raw architectural elements with premium care, with Aesop serving as the official amenities partner. The result is an environment that feels both clinical and inviting, designed to slow the body while sharpening the senses.
A Curated Hydrotherapy Journey
The experience unfolds through a structured seventy five minute circuit. Guests enter at a cold rolled steel reception desk before beginning with a tactile hand cleansing ritual using Aesop formulations. From there, the interior guides visitors through a sequence of spaces defined by aluminum lattices, glass blocks, and stainless steel details. At the heart of the bathhouse sits a circular cedar sauna, where tiered seating wraps around a central cylindrical heater lit by a soft overhead oculus. This is followed by a blue lit communal cold plunge designed for shared immersion.
Wellness as Cultural Space
The circuit concludes in slate toned recovery zones and a tiled lounge that hosts ambient DJ sets, art projections, and guided breathwork sessions. By combining hydrotherapy with cultural programming, Recess Thermal Station positions itself as more than a bathhouse. Through its balance of industrial restraint and sensory warmth, the space redefines wellness as both a social ritual and a carefully designed architectural experience.
