Kengo Kuma Brings Nature Into Quito’s Skyline With Qapital Tower

quito

A sculptural high rise inspired by the Andes redefines how architecture can connect with its surroundings.

A Landmark Project Rooted in Nature

Kengo Kuma introduces his first project in Ecuador with Qapital Tower, a 32 story mixed use development rising in Quito. Created in collaboration with Uribe Schwarzkopf, the tower is set to reach over 125 meters upon completion in 2029.

The design reflects Kuma’s long standing philosophy of blending architecture with nature, drawing direct influence from the rugged textures and formations of the Andes Mountains.

A Façade Inspired by Geology

The exterior of Qapital Tower is defined by its highly textured surface, featuring carved balconies and floor to ceiling glass. These elements are designed to mimic the porous qualities of volcanic rock, with greenery integrated throughout to create a living, breathing façade.

This approach creates a visual dialogue between the natural landscape and the urban skyline, bringing organic forms into a dense city environment while maintaining a sense of softness and depth.

Compact Living With Elevated Design

Inside, the tower offers over 500 micro apartment units designed to meet the needs of Quito’s growing short term rental market. Despite their compact size, residents have access to a wide range of amenities including wellness spaces, a fitness center, cinema, and a rooftop terrace with a swimming pool.

The project also features a custom mosaic installation by Fornasetti produced by Bisazza, marking a notable design moment within the development. With most units already sold before construction begins, Qapital Tower stands as both an architectural statement and a signal of Quito’s evolving design landscape.
