A Paris Penthouse Reimagined as a Private Art Museum

Architect Sophie Dries transforms a historic triplex into a refined collector’s residence filled with art and design.

A Three Level Home Designed for Art Collectors

Located in a historic building in the heart of Paris, a triplex penthouse has been completely redesigned by architect and designer Sophie Dries. The renovation transformed the residence into what Dries describes as a collector’s penthouse, carefully structured to showcase an extensive art collection while remaining a comfortable living space.

The home is now organized across three distinct levels. One floor houses an expanded primary suite for the owners, another is dedicated to guest accommodations, and the top level serves as an entertainment space that opens onto two large terraces overlooking the rooftops of Paris.

Materials That Highlight the Art Collection

Throughout the interior, Dries selected restrained materials and neutral tones that allow the artwork to remain the focal point of the space. Surfaces such as travertine, wood burl and soft toned finishes create a calm architectural backdrop for the couple’s collection of more than 300 artworks and design objects.

Among the works displayed in the penthouse are pieces by Pablo Picasso, Jannis Kounellis and Claire Tabouret. The understated palette and carefully considered lighting help emphasize the character and presence of each artwork.

Sculptural Architecture and Iconic Design Pieces

A sculptural staircase that wraps around the building’s elevator acts as the architectural centerpiece of the home. This feature connects the previously fragmented spaces and creates a continuous flow between levels.

Several structural elements were also reimagined during the renovation. A former attic was converted into a panoramic reading room, while a curved corridor was redesigned as a dedicated drawing cabinet.

The interior also features a mix of iconic and custom furniture pieces that create a dialogue with the artwork. Highlights include a bronze sideboard by Garouste and Bonetti, a 1980s fireplace by sculptor Philolaos and contemporary designs by Gaetano Pesce and Wonmin Park. Together, these elements transform the penthouse into a space that functions as both a private home and a living gallery.
