X+Living Crafts a Temple of Shadows and Stories for the Zhongshuge Bookstore in Tianjin

Step inside a space where architecture becomes a journey of light, shadow, and literary discovery.

A Fusion of Heritage and Modern Design

X+Living has transformed the Zhongshuge bookstore in Tianjin’s Italian-style district into a striking cultural landmark. The project reimagines a contemporary building as a hub of literature and architecture, blending modern design with historic surroundings.

The design relies on two raw structural materials: red brick and dark blue steel. Inspired by the historical and cultural significance of red brick in Chinese and Italian architecture, X+Living used approximately 400,000 custom-made bricks. Italianate details like columns and round arches are laid with layered horizontal gaps, creating a Venetian blind effect that lightens the visual weight of the facade.

An Immersive Interior Journey

Inside, visitors experience a space that is both physical and contemplative. Layered bay windows and cascading steel panels produce dramatic plays of light and shadow, turning solid materials into seemingly fluid forms. The central atrium features deep blue steel arranged in wave-like layers, symbolizing the flow of knowledge and ideas. Tiered staircases and bookshelves guide visitors through a metaphorical journey of discovery and reflection.

Craftsmanship and Contemplation

Every element of the bookstore emphasizes meticulous craftsmanship. Custom bricks of varying shapes create complex curves, while the steel panels enhance the spatial rhythm. The materials are revealed as functional forms, inviting visitors to slow down and engage with the contemplative act of reading. Zhongshuge Tianjin stands as a testament to thoughtful design and the transformative power of architecture in cultural spaces.
