Suzhou’s Baihua Bookstore Reimagined

Inside the China Kunqu Opera Museum, a once-forgotten bookstore is reborn as a cultural micro-theater inspired by tradition and innovation.

From Exit Corridor to Cultural Destination

Baihua Bookstore, nestled inside the China Kunqu Opera Museum in Suzhou, has undergone a striking transformation by design studio Tsing-Tien Making. Originally created as a 65-square-meter reading space dedicated to Kunqu literature, the bookstore gradually lost its identity and became little more than a passageway out of the museum. The redesign sets out to change that—repositioning Baihua as a true cultural destination that deepens the museum experience rather than serving as an afterthought.

A Micro Theater Inspired by Kunqu Opera

At the heart of the new concept is the Tangmingdan, a collapsible façade once used by traditional opera troupes. Borrowing its logic of mobility, identity, and generativity, the architects reimagined the bookstore as a flexible micro-theater. Movable display units, magnetic mounting systems, and retractable curtains allow the space to adapt fluidly—from quiet browsing to live events and cultural gatherings. This “bookstore-plus” model ensures that Baihua is not just a place for books, but also for performance, dialogue, and community.

Blending Heritage and Contemporary Craft

The material palette bridges past and present. The north façade of the central structure is clad in reclaimed wooden doors discovered on-site, carbonized to reveal their natural grain. Carved window panels from the original bookstore were carefully preserved and embedded as narrative fragments within the design. In contrast, the south façade introduces galvanized perforated steel, its pattern abstracted from crescent-shaped ornaments worn by Kunqu actors. The result is a layered, symbolic composition that honors tradition while projecting a contemporary identity.
