Sabine Marcelis Scales Up Mathmos’ Iconic Lava Lamp

The designer transforms the nostalgic lava lamp into a sculptural, floor-to-ceiling light installation.

A Monumental Reimagining

Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis has partnered with Mathmos to reinterpret the brand’s iconic lava lamp as a giant light sculpture. The Column Lava Lamp stands just under three meters tall, turning the familiar hypnotic flow of liquid wax into a calm, architectural presence. Each piece is crafted from frosted borosilicate glass with a matte white aluminium base and cap, finished with Marcelis’ signature soft translucency and produced to order in the UK.

Colorways and Design Philosophy

The Column Lamp is available in three pastel shades — Bubblegum, Peach, and Honeydew — translating Mathmos’ playful pop heritage into a minimalist, sculptural object. Marcelis commented, “I always wanted to design a giant lava lamp. That dream is now becoming reality.” The collaboration highlights a balance of technical precision and artistic expression, bringing the classic lava lamp into a new dimension.

Limited Editions and Availability

Alongside the Column, Mathmos is releasing a limited-edition Astro Lamp in Marcelis’ Honeydew hue, limited to 1,000 pieces. The Astro Lamp applies a frosted coating and mint-toned detailing to the original 1963 form, creating a fresh perspective on the lava’s flow and light diffusion. Both editions are available exclusively through Mathmos’ website, with the Astro launching October 23 and the Column on October 24, 2025.
