The compact hatchback is reborn with electric and hybrid options on a new platform.
A Comeback With a New Direction
Mercedes-Benz is bringing back the A-Class for a fifth generation in 2028, reversing earlier plans to phase it out. The model will continue as a compact hatchback, staying true to its original identity rather than shifting into a crossover. This time around, however, it adopts a more flexible approach, offering both fully electric and hybrid powertrains to meet changing market demand.
Built on a Flexible MMA Platform
The new A-Class will ride on Mercedes’ Modular Architecture (MMA), allowing both EV and combustion-based variants to be produced on the same line. Electric versions are expected to feature an 800V system with battery options up to 85 kWh, delivering around 224 horsepower in entry-level form. Hybrid models will use a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine paired with electrification, producing up to 220 horsepower.
Positioned for a New Competitive Era
While the silhouette remains a five-door hatch, the design will evolve with sharper styling and a slightly raised stance to accommodate battery packaging. Inside, the focus shifts toward visibility and usability, appealing to buyers looking for a compact yet practical option. The electric A-Class is also set to compete directly with Audi’s upcoming A2, signaling a renewed push in the entry-level premium EV segment.
