Inside SALT’s New East London Office Designed with Repurposed Ingenuity

In the heart of Shoreditch, SALT opens a sustainable studio space that rethinks how a creative office should look and feel.

A Workspace Rooted in Resourcefulness

Architecture communications studio SALT has officially opened the doors to its new East London headquarters — a flexible, open-plan space designed by London-based THISS Studio with a sharp focus on reuse and material circularity.

The goal was simple but ambitious: use as many repurposed materials as possible. The result is a workspace that’s part office, part event space, part photography studio — all built with creativity and environmental responsibility in mind.

Salvage with Style

At the center of the space are oversized tables made from reclaimed steel catering units, their legs trimmed and mounted on wheels. The custom worktop blends salvaged cork with leftover American white oak trim, both saved from landfill.

There’s no traditional meeting room. Instead, a dramatic curtain made from surplus Irish linen — designed by textile artist Georgia Bosson — can be pulled around to create private zones as needed. Nearly every piece of furniture is either second-hand or built from scrap, including a bookshelf found on Gumtree that previously lived in a butcher’s shop.

Sustainable paint brand Bleo provided the warm rust-toned coating for exposed beams and columns, while the original floors were simply sanded back and finished with matte varnish — a quiet nod to the building’s past.

A Creative Hub for the Community

“This project was about working with limitations, not against them,” said THISS Studio Director Tamsin Hanke. “The design process demanded flexibility and imagination, which actually pushed the creative outcome further.”

For SALT, the new space is more than just an office — it’s a meeting point for collaborators, clients, and creatives alike. “This studio is as much for our community as it is for SALT,” said founding director Celeste Bolte.

More than just a stylish new address, SALT’s Shoreditch space sets a new standard for what a sustainable creative office can be — intentional, inviting, and driven by design that doesn’t cost the earth.
