ANA’s New Business-Class Suite Flips the Lie-Flat Script

ANA's New Business-Class Suite

Japan’s flagship carrier launches ‘The Room FX’ on its 787-9 fleet this August, swapping the recline mechanism for a permanently angled sofa setup.

All Nippon Airways is about to rewrite the business-class playbook. Starting this August, the Japanese carrier rolls out The Room FX, a fundamentally different take on the premium cabin that ditches the traditional recline for a fixed sofa configuration on its Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

The departure from lie-flat convention signals a shift in how carriers think about seat design. Rather than engineering a mechanical transformation, ANA’s new suite arrives pre-angled, built as a permanent reclining sofa. The pitch and positioning remain constant, eliminating the mechanical complexity and allowing the brand to focus engineering effort elsewhere: storage, control systems, and the cocoon-like privacy that business travelers increasingly demand on ultra-long-haul routes.

This isn’t the first carrier to challenge the lie-flat orthodoxy, but ANA’s execution points toward a maturing market. Airlines have spent two decades one-upping each other on recline degrees and mattress thickness. The Room FX suggests that conversation has shifted toward total environment design. The fixed angle also reduces wear on mechanical components, potentially offering cabin crews easier maintenance on turnarounds.

The 787-9, a sweet spot for premium configurations on trans-Pacific and European routes, becomes ANA’s testing ground for what could reshape how Japanese carriers compete in the ultra-premium long-haul space. Expect the industry to watch whether passengers accept the trade-off of a non-reclining product in exchange for other luxury refinements and operational consistency.
