Adrian Zecha Returns With a Nature Focused Resort in Japan

Azuma Farm Koiwai invites guests to reconnect with nature through farm life and traditional Japanese hospitality.

A New Hospitality Concept Rooted in Nature

Adrian Zecha, the founder of Aman, has unveiled a new hospitality project through Azumi Japan with the opening of Azuma Farm Koiwai in Iwate Prefecture. Developed in partnership with East Japan Railway Company, the new brand centers on a philosophy of returning to a simpler lifestyle inspired by agriculture, nature and community.

The retreat is located within an eight hectare section of the historic Koiwai Farm, a property with more than 130 years of agricultural history. Surrounded by mountains and forest, the destination is designed as a peaceful escape that celebrates the rhythms of farm life while preserving the local environment.

Architecture Inspired by Landscape and Craft

The property was designed by Kyoto based architect Shiro Miura of Rokkaku ya, whose vision blends rustic elements with refined Japanese craftsmanship. The resort includes 24 villa style guest rooms featuring natural wooden interiors that reflect the surrounding landscape.

By partnering with the historic Koiwai Farm, the project also plays a role in protecting agricultural traditions and maintaining the region’s forests. The design draws inspiration from the natural scenery of the Tohoku region as well as the writings of local poet Kenji Miyazawa, creating a setting that emphasizes harmony with nature.

An Immersive Experience of Farm Life

Azuma Farm Koiwai continues Zecha’s long standing focus on mindful hospitality. The resort encourages guests to slow down and engage with seasonal living through activities that connect directly to the landscape.

Experiences at the property include horseback riding across the farmland, guided walks through nearby forests and dining that highlights local ingredients and agricultural traditions. The retreat is accessible by taking the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Morioka Station, followed by a shuttle to the property.

Azuma Farm Koiwai is scheduled to officially open on April 23, 2026 with reservations available through Azumi Japan’s booking channels.
