The upcoming landmark reimagines the museum as an open, living platform for the city.
A Cultural Hub Designed for a New Era
Büro Ole Scheeren’s Róng Museum of Art is set to become a defining cultural destination in Shenzhen. Located in the Nanshan District, the project is designed to merge visual art, digital culture and urban life into a single, cohesive environment.
Commissioned within a larger mixed use development, the museum sits at the center of a 24 hour ecosystem that includes residences, offices and retail. Rather than standing apart, it acts as a civic anchor that connects technology driven growth with cultural expression.
A Striking Form With Sustainable Purpose
The building’s design is defined by cone shaped volumes wrapped in suspended glass tubes. These elements create a translucent outer layer that filters light while referencing traditional uses of glass in Chinese architecture.
Beyond aesthetics, the structure is engineered for environmental performance. The glass tubes provide shading, ventilation and rainwater collection, aligning with Shenzhen’s broader sustainability goals. During the day, the façade softens natural light into the galleries, while at night it transforms into a glowing presence across the skyline.
An Open Museum for Public Exchange
At ground level, the museum lifts its galleries to create a covered public plaza beneath. This space is designed as an all access forum for events, screenings and installations, encouraging everyday interaction with art.
Inside, the museum includes a range of gallery spaces, including large scale exhibition halls and interconnected pathways that guide visitors through the building. A rooftop garden extends the experience outdoors, offering views of the waterfront while hosting performances and cultural programming.
Scheduled to open in 2027, the Róng Museum of Art represents a new model for cultural architecture, where design, technology and community come together to shape a more open and interactive public space.
