The landmark exhibition celebrates the full arc of the artist’s life and creative practice.
Six Decades of Innovation and Creativity
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao will host Ruth Asawa: Retrospective, following successful runs at MoMA in New York and SFMOMA. Opening on March 19 and running through September 13, the show coincides with what would have been Asawa’s centennial birthday. Spanning ten sections and covering work from 1947 to 2006, the exhibition charts her journey from childhood in a Japanese internment camp to her later years in her home studio.
A Diverse Array of Works
Visitors can explore a wide range of Asawa’s output, including nature-inspired tied-wire sculptures, clay and bronze casts, paperfolds, paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, and lithographs. Her iconic looped-wire pieces are featured prominently, alongside archival photographs and ephemera that reveal the intimacy behind her acclaimed public works. This retrospective offers an unparalleled look at the artist’s relentless curiosity and transformative approach to ordinary materials.
