Ian Schrager’s PUBLIC Takes Over the Sunset Strip This Fall

Public Sunset Strip: The Studio 54 co-founder is opening a $116.5 million hotel in West Hollywood, designed by minimalist architect John Pawson.

Ian Schrager is doing it again. The man who turned nightlife into a lifestyle brand with Studio 54 and later redefined boutique hotels through the PUBLIC collection is bringing his signature maximalist-minimalist collision to the Sunset Strip this fall with PUBLIC Sunset Strip. The reopened property, a total reimagining of what was once the Standard Hotel, represents Schrager’s largest investment in the PUBLIC concept to date at $116.5 million, and it’s being positioned as the cultural event of West Hollywood’s hospitality calendar in 2026.

What makes this particular opening land differently than a standard luxury hotel refresh is the philosophical approach embedded in its design. John Pawson, the British architect known for stripping spaces down to their essential elements, has handled the bones of the building. Pawson’s work typically trades in negative space and material restraint, a methodology that seems counterintuitive for Schrager, whose career has been defined by sensory maximalism. Yet that tension is exactly the point. Schrager has always understood that luxury lives in curation, not clutter. The PUBLIC Sunset property appears designed around this principle: a razor-sharp editing of what matters, paired with the kind of social energy that made his earlier venues cultural destinations rather than just places to sleep or eat.

The opening codifies a shift in how legacy venues get treated in LA, not demolished or completely rebranded away from their past, but absorbed and recontextualized through a fresh lens. PUBLIC Sunset Strip emerges not as an erasure of the Standard’s cultural moment, but as its translation into contemporary luxury hospitality, cementing Schrager’s influence over West Hollywood’s ongoing reinvention.
