The Bowery institution doubles its footprint with a new seven-story addition designed for art, movement and community.
A Museum Built for Expansion
OMA’s newly completed addition brings over 60,000 square feet of space to the New Museum, effectively doubling its exhibition capacity. Designed as a “cultural laboratory,” the expansion supports the institution’s growing ambitions in contemporary art, education and experimentation, reinforcing its role as a platform for living artists and new ideas.
Architecture That Connects and Flows
The new structure works in dialogue with the original SANAA building, combining a similar glass façade with a more horizontally oriented layout. Inside, aligned gallery floors, a central Atrium Stair and improved circulation create a seamless visitor experience, allowing for both large-scale exhibitions and flexible, independent programming across the combined campus.
A Broader Cultural Ecosystem
Beyond gallery space, the expansion introduces artist studios, a dedicated home for NEW INC, public terraces and community-focused areas. With features like a ground-level plaza and rooftop programming spaces, the museum opens itself more directly to the city—transforming from a standalone building into an active, interconnected cultural hub.
