Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre hunt a cosmic killer across Nebraska in HBO’s grittiest superhero play yet.
HBO drops Lanterns tonight, and it’s the closest DC has come to making a procedural that doesn’t feel like it’s apologizing for existing. Kyle Chandler, who spent years as the moral spine of Midwestern television, pairs with Aaron Pierre as two Green Lanterns investigating a murder in rural Nebraska. The premise sounds high concept until you realize the show is basically treating the ring like a badge and the cosmos like just another jurisdiction.
The casting move is deliberate. Chandler carries the weight of someone who’s earned his authority; Pierre brings the hunger of someone still proving he belongs in the same frame. Put them in Nebraska flatland instead of Gotham’s gothic alleys, and you’re signaling that this isn’t a cape story pretending to be gritty. It’s a cop story where the cops happen to have intergalactic backup.
The real swing here is tonal. DC’s streaming efforts have tried cosmic scope and grounded detective work separately. Lanterns appears to be betting that the uncanny part isn’t a alien ring or interdimensional police force. It’s two men trying to solve the unsolvable in a place where nothing extraordinary ever happens. That’s the kind of tension that actually sticks.
