Ghost in the Shell Gets a Full Anime Resurrection on Prime Video

Science Saru’s bold reboot of the 1989 cyberpunk classic arrives this week, and it’s not what purists expected.

The iconic 1989 Ghost in the Shell manga is getting the full anime treatment courtesy of Science Saru, the studio behind the cult hit Devilman Crybaby. The series drops on Prime Video this week, marking the most ambitious adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s source material since the original 1995 film and its various spinoffs. What makes this version distinct is that it’s not another nostalgic callback or slavish remake. It’s positioned as a complete reimagining that treats the cyberpunk world and its philosophical core as a springboard rather than a museum piece.

Science Saru has built a reputation for taking existing IP and pushing it toward surrealism and emotional rawness. They’re doing that here with visuals that blend digital and hand-drawn animation in ways that feel contemporary without abandoning the franchise’s 80s aesthetic DNA. The studio has spent years developing this, and the result is being positioned as the canonical anime version for a new generation, even as the 1995 Mamoru Oshii film remains untouchable in the critical canon.

What most viewers will overlook: the show’s thematic focus on identity and consciousness remains dead center, but the narrative architecture is entirely new. This isn’t a scene-by-scene retelling. Science Saru has constructed original storylines around the Major, Batou, and Section 9 that honor the property’s obsession with what makes us human while ditching the fanservice callbacks that have plagued recent Ghost in the Shell projects. For longtime followers, that should feel like either liberation or betrayal depending on where you stand. For newcomers, it’s simply an entry point into one of anime’s most enduring universes.
