Prime Video and HBO Max are betting everything on back-to-back blockbuster arrivals that could reshape the streaming conversation heading into fall.
The first week of August is about to get very crowded. Prime Video is rolling out the fourth season of Reacher, the Jack Ryan universe spinoff that’s become a quiet juggernaut for the streamer, while HBO Max launches Lanterns, DC’s most ambitious attempt yet to build momentum in television after the theatrical superhero bubble burst. Both arrive within days of each other, and the timing isn’t accidental.
Reacher has spent three seasons proving that a gritty, self-contained action procedural can compete with prestige drama and Marvel-level spectacle. The show found an audience by leaning into pulpy efficiency: each season is a standalone case, the action is brute-force practical, and Alan Ritchson’s interpretation of Lee Child’s character prioritizes physicality over quippy banter. Season 4 introduces a new mystery and another rotating cast of antagonists, but the formula that works stays intact.
Lanterns is the riskier play. DC’s green lantern mythology has been notoriously difficult to crack on screen, and the network is counting on this origin series to prove that the universe can work as serialized television rather than as tentpole films. The cast includes Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, and the premise strips away the cosmic scope to focus on detective work and earthbound mystery. It’s HBO betting that grounded storytelling, not CGI spectacle, is what was missing from past attempts.
The real lesson here isn’t about which show wins audience share. It’s that August, once the dumping ground for prestige networks, has become the inflection point where streamers launch their fall narratives. Peak TV isn’t clustered around September anymore. It’s spread across the calendar, and the first week of next month just became unmissable.
