Tino Sehgal Blurs Art and Life in His Guadalajara Exhibition

The Golden Lion winner brings his living works to Mexico in an experience defined by presence and participation.

A First Solo Show in Mexico

Tino Sehgal has opened his first solo exhibition in Mexico at the Museo de Arte de Zapopan, presenting a series of live works at the newly inaugurated Estación MAZ. Known for rejecting documentation and traditional objects, Sehgal centers his practice on what he calls constructed situations, encounters that unfold in real time between performers and visitors. The Guadalajara exhibition invites audiences to step into these fleeting moments rather than observe from a distance.

Iconic Works Built on Human Exchange

At the core of the exhibition is Kiss, one of Sehgal’s most recognized works. Two dancers appear locked in an intimate embrace, gradually revealing the piece through movement rather than announcement. The work echoes centuries of art historical depictions of intimacy while remaining grounded in the present moment. Also on view is Yet Untitled, the Golden Lion winning piece from the 2013 Venice Biennale, where singers and dancers form a shifting collective that blends pop culture, rhythm, and spirituality through voice and movement.

A New Commission for Zapopan

Beginning January 29, Sehgal introduces These Associations, a new work created specifically for the venue. Presented daily along the Andador 20 de Noviembre walkway, the piece unfolds through spontaneous storytelling and close interactions that draw visitors into active participation. Rooted in a practice Sehgal first explored at Tate Modern, the work transforms public space into a site of shared experience. The exhibition remains on view in Guadalajara through March 1.
