Inside the Sunshine State’s history as a playground and sanctuary for visionary minds.
A Cultural Cartography of Florida
Cultural Counsel’s new book, THE DEEP STATE: ART, CULTURE & FLORIDA, traces the state’s eccentric and vibrant creative history. From overlooked pioneers to celebrated icons, the book uncovers how Florida became a site of experimentation, reinvention, and sometimes surreal escape for artists, designers, and thinkers.
Voices and Visions
THE DEEP STATE features work by Harmony Korine, who co-designed the cover with Zaha Hadid, alongside contributions from John Singer Sargent and Bunny Yeager. Through essays, photographs, and conversations with cultural figures, the book captures Florida as both a haven and a hallucination for creative minds.
Stories That Blur Myth and Reality
Readers encounter a mix of hidden histories and fascinating tales, from Andrew Cunanan’s final stop in Miami Beach to Tampa’s death metal roots, the Florida Highwaymen, Doris Wishman’s overlooked films, and Sargent’s rumored retreats to the state. Printed as a 228-page hardcover in a limited edition of 2,100 copies, the book will launch this December during Art Basel Miami Beach.
