Porsche Brings Back the Manual 911 and Enthusiasts Are About to Lose It

Porsche Brings Back the Manual 911 and Enthusiasts

After years of all-automatic 911s, Porsche just announced a six-speed stick for the 2027 Carrera S at Monterey Car Week.

Porsche dropped a grenade into the sports car world this week: the 2027 911 Carrera S is getting a three-pedal manual transmission. A proper six-speed stick, not some marketing novelty. This is the real deal, and it signals something massive about where the market’s actually headed versus where manufacturers thought it was going.

For over a decade, Porsche has been aggressively pushing dual-clutch automatics as the future of the 911. Faster acceleration, quicker shifts, better track times, the numbers all favored the paddle-shifters. Meanwhile, enthusiasts kept buying used manual 911s and driving them like they’d just inherited the Ark of the Covenant. The used market was screaming a message Porsche couldn’t ignore forever. So they listened.

Here’s what makes this genuinely different from other automakers tossing a manual into the mix as a gesture: Porsche’s announcing this now, before the car even arrives. This isn’t a surprise drop or a “we heard you” afterthought. It’s a calculated move at Monterey Car Week, the one event where collectors and automotive media converge to talk money and meaning. The timing says Porsche knows this matters enough to lead with it.

The six-speed won’t be the fastest gearbox on the roster, and it definitely won’t own the 0-to-60 crown anymore. But that’s not why people want it. They want the mechanical connection, the ritual of driving, the thing you can’t quantify in a spec sheet. After years of the industry betting we’d all just accept whatever was fastest, Porsche finally grasped that some customers aren’t optimizing, they’re experiencing.
