The upcoming museum will house the world’s largest collection dedicated to the influential Swiss sculptor.
A New Cultural Landmark for Giacometti’s Legacy
Paris is preparing to open a museum devoted entirely to the life and work of renowned Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Scheduled to open in the second half of 2028, the Musée & École Giacometti will occupy the former Gare des Invalides, according to the Fondation Alberto et Annette Giacometti.
The institution will become the largest museum collection dedicated to the artist, bringing together more than 10,000 pieces that highlight Giacometti’s decades long career. The collection will include thousands of drawings, over 400 sculptures and around 100 paintings, alongside decorative objects, prints and archival materials taken directly from the artist’s studio.
A Rare Look at Works Across His Career
The museum’s collection will span Giacometti’s entire artistic journey, from his earliest works to pieces created near the end of his life. Many of these works have rarely been exhibited publicly, giving visitors a deeper look into the development of one of the most influential sculptors of the twentieth century.
According to the foundation, the archive will also include materials that once existed in Giacometti’s personal workspace, offering insight into his creative process and the environment where many of his most famous works were produced.
Exhibition Space, Education and Studio Reconstruction
The new museum will cover approximately 6,000 square meters, significantly expanding the foundation’s current presence in Paris. Half of the space will be dedicated to exhibitions, featuring permanent displays of Giacometti’s work alongside pieces from modern and contemporary artists.
The remaining space will include a bookstore, restaurant, cafe and educational areas designed for non degree art classes. Visitors will also be able to see a reconstructed version of Giacometti’s original atelier, the studio where he lived and worked from 1926 until his death in 1966.
