Exploring layered interiors and surreal compositions through a cubist lens.
A New York Debut
Berlin-based Chilean painter Pablo Benzo presents his first solo exhibition in New York, Time Traveler and Other Fragile Detours, at The Hole Tribeca. The show features five new paintings and six works on paper, drawing inspiration from Peggy Guggenheim’s 1940s gallery Art of This Century, a key site for Surrealism and Cubism in the city.
Surreal Cubist Interiors
Benzo merges figures, furniture, and plants in layered, volumetric spaces. Using a muted palette of greens, yellows, magentas, and blues, his brushy, stippled oils create a blend of abstraction and figuration. Recurring motifs like the “pancake plant” add rhythm and balance to the scenes.
Highlighted Works
Notable pieces include a living room scene where a woman gazes beside a Modigliani-style nude within a painting, and compositions where sofas and figures morph into curving, playful forms. Across the series, Benzo experiments with perspective and layered imagery, reflecting what he calls a “sensory inheritance.”
The exhibition runs through October 11 at The Hole Tribeca.
