A playful yet spiritual universe unfolds through ceramics, paintings and sculptural creatures.
A World Rooted In Animism
Otani Workshop, the Kaikai Ki Ki backed artist born Shigeru Otani, has opened anima at Perrotin New York. Known for bringing life to clay and form, Otani draws deeply from animism, the belief that every object carries spirit. His characters appear innocent and endearing, yet quietly mystical, offering an emotional bridge between childhood wonder and adult reflection.
Craft That Blends Tradition And Fantasy
Raised in Shigaraki, Japan’s historic pottery hub, Otani carries forward centuries of ceramic tradition with a contemporary twist. The exhibition features bronze, FRP busts, painted works and expressive ceramic figures. Each surface is intentionally raw and tactile, revealing the physicality of his process. Otani shapes with instinct, letting the material guide him, resulting in pieces that feel spontaneous, alive and suspended between sculpture and storybook fantasy.
