After nearly two years of renovation, the New Museum is set to welcome the public back into a transformed Bowery landmark.
A Long Awaited Reopening
The New Museum in New York will officially reopen on March twenty one, marking the completion of a decade long planning process and a two year closure. The eighty two million dollar project introduces a sixty thousand square foot extension designed by OMA, nearly doubling the museum’s original SANAA designed footprint and significantly expanding its capacity for exhibitions and public programming.
Inside the OMA Expansion
Led by Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas, the new building adds nine thousand six hundred square feet of exhibition space alongside artist studios, flexible event venues, and a dedicated home for New Inc, the museum’s cultural incubator. Circulation has been rethought through a new entrance plaza, elevators, and an Atrium Stair, each enhanced by site specific commissions from Tschabalala Self, Klára Hosnedlová, and Sarah Lucas. A full scale restaurant led by the Oberon Group and chef Julia Sherman further positions the museum as a cultural destination beyond exhibitions.
Opening Exhibitions and Public Access
The reopening will be anchored by New Humans Memories of the Future, an ambitious inaugural exhibition featuring work by two hundred artists and spanning the entire museum. To mark the occasion, the New Museum will offer free admission during its opening weekend on March twenty one and twenty two, inviting visitors to experience the expanded institution as it enters its next chapter.
