The British marque sets its sights on endurance racing glory once again with a new hybrid prototype and exclusive track focused customer machine.
A New Chapter in Endurance Racing
McLaren is making a full return to top level endurance competition with the introduction of the MCL HY, a hybrid prototype developed for the 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship. Built through a collaboration between McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive, the project marks the brand’s most serious push back into Le Mans competition in decades.
The program also introduces a customer focused variant known as the MCL HY GTR, a track only machine limited to 35 units. Designed for private owners, it delivers an unfiltered driving experience inspired directly by the race car platform.
Stripped Down Performance and Engineering Focus
The MCL HY GTR removes the hybrid systems required for FIA competition and instead relies on a 2.9 litre twin turbocharged V6 engine. This approach reduces weight and places emphasis on pure driving performance and responsiveness.
Owners of the GTR will gain access to a dedicated program connected to McLaren’s motorsport engineering ecosystem. Production is strictly limited, with deliveries expected to begin in late 2027, making it one of the most exclusive performance offerings in the brand’s modern history.
A Full Scale Assault on Endurance Racing
In official FIA competition, McLaren will operate the MCL HY in partnership with United Autosports, fielding two prototype entries in the World Endurance Championship. Early testing features a design inspired by historic McLaren endurance race liveries, connecting the new program to the brand’s racing heritage.
Driver development is already underway with a lineup that includes Mikkel Jensen, Ben Hanley, Gregoire Saucy, and Richard Verschoor, all contributing to early stage testing and refinement.
McLaren leadership has positioned the program as part of a broader multi series strategy, with the brand now active in Formula 1, IndyCar, and World Endurance Championship competition. The MCL HY project represents a renewed push toward achieving endurance racing success at the highest level, including a long term ambition to add another victory at Le Mans to its legacy.
