Lamborghini Kills Its First EV, Citing “Zero” Demand

The Lanzador is shelved as the brand doubles down on plug-in hybrids.

Lanzador Project Officially Cancelled

Lamborghini has officially scrapped plans for its first all-electric vehicle, the Lanzador, marking a major strategic pivot for the Italian automaker. Originally revealed as a high-riding 2+2 Ultra GT concept slated for a 2028 production debut, the EV has now been abandoned due to a lack of customer interest.

CEO Stephan Winkelmann confirmed the decision, stating that demand for high-end electric supercars is currently “close to zero.” According to internal analysis, the acceptance curve among Lamborghini’s core clientele has effectively stalled, raising concerns that continuing development would amount to what he described as “an expensive hobby.”

Emotion Over Electrification

At the heart of the decision is Lamborghini’s belief that battery-electric powertrains struggle to replicate the emotional connection of combustion engines — a defining trait of the brand’s identity. For buyers accustomed to the mechanical drama of a V12 or turbocharged V8, the silent delivery of an EV has yet to prove compelling.

Rather than pushing forward with a product that doesn’t resonate with its audience, Lamborghini is opting to recalibrate.

A Hybrid-Only Future — For Now

Instead of going fully electric, the Sant’Agata Bolognese marque will focus on expanding its plug-in hybrid lineup. This strategy builds on the momentum of models like the Revuelto and the Urus SE, which blend electrification with traditional combustion power to meet emissions regulations without sacrificing performance or character.

While Winkelmann stopped short of ruling out a fully electric Lamborghini in the long term, the immediate future of the Raging Bull remains hybrid — not battery-only.

For now, Lamborghini is betting that spark plugs still matter more than charging cables in the ultra-luxury performance segment.
