JR Transforms Paris’ Oldest Bridge Into An Immersive Stone Cave

paris

The artist’s latest installation turns the historic Pont Neuf into a surreal passageway filled with sound, scent, and illusion.

A Monument Reimagined Above The Seine

French artist JR has unveiled “La Caverne du Pont Neuf,” an ambitious installation that transforms Paris’ oldest bridge into a monumental cave suspended above the Seine. Open around the clock through June 28, the work wraps the 17th-century landmark in nearly 18,900 square feet of fabric printed with images of Lutetian limestone, the same stone that helped shape much of Paris’ architecture.

Created as a tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s famed 1985 “The Pont Neuf Wrapped,” the project reinterprets the bridge as a prehistoric landscape. Stretching 120 meters in length and composed of 80 inflated canvas arches, the structure invites visitors into a deliberately disorienting environment that blurs the line between city and geology.

Sound And Scent Complete The Experience

Beyond the visual illusion, “La Caverne du Pont Neuf” engages multiple senses. A custom electroacoustic soundtrack created by Thomas Bangalter, formerly of Daft Punk, fills the passageway with atmospheric sound. An accompanying olfactory composition developed by perfumer Sarah Bouasse and Odore Scola introduces earthy aromas designed to evoke ancient landscapes and subterranean spaces.

According to JR, the installation represents a symbolic crossing into the unknown, balancing feelings of fullness and emptiness while encouraging introspection. The experience transforms a familiar landmark into something entirely unexpected.

Continuing JR’s Exploration Of Illusion

The cave motif has become a recurring theme in JR’s work. Beginning in 2020, the artist explored ideas of isolation and perception through large-scale trompe-l’œil interventions across Florence, Milan, and Rome. “La Caverne du Pont Neuf” brings those concepts to Paris, drawing inspiration from both Plato’s allegory of the cave and humanity’s earliest cave paintings.

To coincide with the installation, Galerie Perrotin is also presenting an exhibition of new works by JR, on view through July 25. Together, the projects continue the artist’s fascination with transforming iconic spaces into immersive experiences that connect history, memory, and contemporary culture.
