A closer look at the fair’s mix of blue-chip icons and contemporary standouts.
A Global Stage for Contemporary Art
Art Basel Hong Kong 2026 returned from March 27 to March 29, once again turning the city into a major meeting point for the international art world. Hosted at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the fair brought together leading galleries, collectors and artists for a dense, wide-ranging presentation that spans both historical and contemporary practices.
Heavyweight Galleries and International Presence
The floor was anchored by some of the most influential galleries in the world, including Gagosian, David Zwirner and Almine Rech, each presenting museum-quality works. At the same time, galleries like Kaikai Kiki and Nanzuka contributed a strong presence of Japanese contemporary art, adding a different energy to the overall mix and balancing the more traditional blue-chip offerings.
From Picasso to Murakami
What stood out most was the range of work on display. Visitors could move from classic pieces by Pablo Picasso to immersive installations by James Turrell, then into contemporary works by artists like Takashi Murakami, Hajime Sorayama and Yoshitomo Nara. The fair blended different eras, styles and mediums, creating a layered experience that reflects the current state of the global art scene.
