Great Smoky Mountains Is Gen Z’s Summer Obsession

Great Smoky Mountains

America’s most-visited national park is having its biggest cultural moment yet, powered by TikTok aesthetics and a generation hungry for the real.

The Smokies are no longer your parents’ road trip. Somewhere between the rise of cottage-core aesthetics and a collective burnout from urban living, a national park straddling Tennessee and North Carolina has become the place to be seen this summer. Gen Z travelers are booking mountain cabins, hiking trails, and waterfall overlooks at a rate that’s reshaping the park’s entire cultural identity, transforming it from a multigenerational tourist destination into the year’s most coveted domestic flex.

What’s driving the surge isn’t complicated: the Smokies hit every visual register that performs on social media right now. Misty ridgelines at dawn, vintage Polaroid vibes in cabin interiors, hiking fits that read as effortlessly outdoorsy. The park’s accessibility matters too. Unlike the influencer-saturated chaos of Yellowstone or the permit-lottery system of some Western peaks, the Smokies sit within a few hours of major population centers and don’t require advance reservations to enter. That combination of beauty, relatability, and friction-free access has made it the path of least resistance for TikTok-native travelers planning their summer.

The cultural texture around the destination has shifted accordingly. Local businesses are catering explicitly to this younger demographic, from wellness-focused Airbnbs with projectors and heated tubs to coffee shops in nearby Gatlinburg pivoting to oat milk lattes and photo-ready latte art. The aesthetic is distinctly Gen Z: moody cabin minimalism meets outdoorsy authenticity, where the hike matters less than the stories it generates. Whether that’s sustainable for the ecosystem remains an open question, but for now, the Smokies have become the summer destination where the internet goes to touch grass and document it.
