Casa Roja Becomes a Public Museum

Mexico City now welcomes Museo Casa Kahlo, transforming the legendary artist’s lifelong family home into a public cultural destination. Operated by Fundación Kahlo, the museum offers an intimate look at Frida’s daily life and family legacy, moving beyond the familiar story of her relationship with Diego Rivera.

The historic home, affectionately known as Casa Roja, was purchased by Frida’s parents and passed down through generations. This personal space shaped her life from childhood to her final years. The new museum, designed by Rockwell Group with creative direction from Pentagram and Ileen Gallagher, preserves the house while transforming it into an immersive exhibition space.

A Glimpse Into Frida’s Private Life

The museum showcases a carefully curated collection of personal artifacts, including handwritten letters, private photographs, and clothing. These pieces reveal Frida as a daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, allowing visitors to connect with her humanity and see the woman behind the iconic self-portraits.

By focusing on her familial and personal roles, Museo Casa Kahlo provides a rare and quiet glimpse into moments that were previously untold, highlighting the complexities and richness of her everyday life.

Visiting Museo Casa Kahlo

Now open to the public, Museo Casa Kahlo invites visitors to explore the artist’s world with unprecedented intimacy. From its evocative exhibitions to its preserved historic spaces, the museum stands as a vital destination for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Frida Kahlo’s life and legacy.
