Es Devlin Turns Miami Beach into a Rotating Book Club

book club

A 50 foot long spinning library of books, sound and spectacle invites readers to gather by the sea.

The Installation

British designer Es Devlin installed Library of Us on Faena Beach as part of Miami Art Week. The triangular structure stretches 50 foot long and rotates on a metallic plinth every 10 minutes. Its exterior features a 34 foot long LED strip displaying moving text while the interior holds 2,500 carefully chosen titles.

The Experience

Visitors can sit at a two ring circular table that drifts with the moving structure and listen to a 250 excerpt audio score narrated by Devlin. Literary fragments, memories and music layer together to create a quiet, communal atmosphere that contrasts with the bustle of the fairgrounds.

Community Impact

Produced in partnership with Penguin Random House, all 2,500 books will be donated to public libraries, schools and community organizations across Miami after the installation closes on December 7. Library of Us celebrates reading, collectivity and the rhythms of the natural environment while leaving a lasting resource for local communities.
