A multi-sensory installation where film, music, and landscape collide.
A Monumental Takeover at The Shed
Doug Aitken brings his immersive work Lightscape to The Shed, taking over a 12,000-square-foot gallery from June 25 through September 13. Spanning seven screens, the installation goes beyond traditional film, unfolding as a continuous, living environment that merges cinema with architecture and performance.
A Portrait of the American West in Motion
Set against the shifting landscapes of Southern California, Lightscape moves through deserts, mountains, and hyper-digital environments, reflecting themes of identity and transformation. Featuring appearances from figures like Beck and Natasha Lyonne, the narrative drifts between realism and abstraction, capturing the instability and intensity of modern life through constantly evolving scenes.
Sound as the Driving Force
Music plays a central role in shaping the experience, with contributions from Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Meredith Monk, Beck, and Aitken himself. Created in collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the score shifts from ambient to intense, reinforcing the work’s emotional range while live performances throughout the run continue to evolve the piece in real time.
