Chappell Roan’s ‘The Subway’ Finally Arrives July 31

Subway

The long-awaited ballad makes its official debut after a year of teasing fans on stage.

The Wait Is Over

Chappell Roan has finally confirmed the release date for her fan-favorite ballad “The Subway” — and it’s arriving July 31 at 8PM EST. After premiering the track live over a year ago at Gov Ball 2024, the Missouri-born pop star is now ready to bring the heartbreak anthem out from underground and into the spotlight.

Roan made the announcement via Instagram, revealing what appears to be the single’s cover art: a photo of herself buried under waves of her signature red hair. Just days earlier, she had been spotted filming what fans guessed was the song’s video — complete with floor-length locks, a fire escape, and a wild ride behind a yellow taxi.

A Live Favorite Finds Its Moment

Since its debut, “The Subway” has become a staple in Roan’s live shows, often stealing the emotional peak of the night. It’s New York City-themed and heartbreak-laced, and Roan’s performances — including one in full Statue of Liberty green — only deepened fan obsession. The official release follows her last single, March’s “The Giver,” and comes on the heels of her breakout run with “Good Luck, Babe!” earlier this year.

What’s Next for Roan

While “The Subway” offers fans something to hold onto, a new album isn’t coming just yet. Just days before announcing the release, Roan shared plans for three intimate pop-up shows in NYC, Kansas City, and Pasadena. She noted that she wanted to do something special before stepping away to begin writing her next full-length project.

With a new song incoming and small, one-off shows on the horizon, Roan is giving fans one more taste before disappearing to dream up what’s next.
