Two decades later, the iconic R&B duo is rewriting the story behind their legendary hit.
From Feud to Friendship: Taking Control of the Narrative
In 1998, Brandy and Monica captured the world’s attention with The Boy Is Mine, a duet about rivalry and romance. While the song spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy, tension between the two singers led to years of rumored feuds and public scrutiny.
Now, over 25 years later, the duo is reclaiming the narrative. Speaking to Essence, Monica reflected, “Even though the lyrical content and some of what started to play out created more division than togetherness, we’ve taken control of that… making the legacy of this song totally different for the next generation.” Brandy added, “It represented sisterhood and the power of collaboration. To see how the song still connects with people around the world is a blessing.”
Revisiting a Classic: The Ariana Grande Remix
The duo also recently collaborated on a remix of The Boy Is Mine with Ariana Grande, which earned a Grammy nod for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Monica said the project reminded them of “how special that moment was,” highlighting the song’s timeless appeal and its ability to connect across generations.
Touring Together: Bringing the Music to Life
As Brandy and Monica prepare for The Boy Is Mine Tour, which kicks off on October 16 in Cincinnati and runs through December 7 in Houston, they shared that creating the setlist was “one of the hardest parts,” due to the sheer number of fan favorites and meaningful tracks. Fans can expect a mix of classics, surprises, and even some unreleased music, making the tour a celebration of reconciliation, friendship, and R&B history.
