Beyond the Canvas Yoshitomo Nara Presents All Within the Detour in Taipei

The artist steps away from painting to share a deeply personal photographic journey shaped by observation, memory, and place.

A New Photographic Chapter

All Within the Detour marks Yoshitomo Nara’s first large scale photography exhibition in Taiwan and is currently on view at Huashan 1914 Creative Park in Taipei. Organized by Big Art and the Yoshitomo Nara Foundation, the exhibition brings together one hundred sixty two new photographs captured across Taiwan, Hokkaido, and Kōbe Island. The presentation expands Nara’s practice beyond his well known paintings and sculptures, revealing a quieter and more observational side of his work.

Everyday Encounters and Emotional Landscapes

The photographs focus on small moments and subtle details, from passing expressions to shifting light and the feeling of wind across open land. Rather than stylized characters, the images rely on direct observation and emotional resonance. Urban and rural scenes appear side by side, forming a visual diary shaped by movement and reflection. Nara has described the works as rooted in personal values, transforming ordinary landscapes into emotional and commemorative narratives.

On View in Taipei

Displayed in the West Five Hall of the Red Brick Area, the exhibition unfolds as a series of fragments that trace both physical travel and inner memory. The works carry a sense of warmth and freedom distinct from the emotional weight of Nara’s traditional art, offering a new way to engage with his creative trajectory. All Within the Detour is on view until January twenty five twenty twenty six, with free admission available through reservation at Huashan 1914 Creative Park.
