BAND-MAID Dive Into Darkness and Justice with New Song What is justice?

justice

The band opens up about their latest anime theme and the creative battles behind it.

A Fierce New Anime Theme

On July 18, BAND-MAID released their latest digital single What is justice?, the ending theme for the anime TOUGEN ANKI. It marks their third release of 2025 and their third consecutive anime tie-in. Blending nu-metal riffs, high-pitched vocals, and introspective lyrics, the track reflects the anime’s violent, morally complex world.

Guitarist KANAMI described wanting the song to capture the intensity of the manga’s fight scenes, while vocalist SAIKI admitted the demanding chorus pushed her to her limits. Bassist MISA and drummer AKANE each crafted parts that balance heaviness with subtle detail, anchoring the song’s raw aggression.

Exploring the Meaning of Justice

Lyricist Kobato explained that the anime’s story—where humanity is divided into Momotaros and Onis—shaped the words. Rather than presenting justice as simple good versus evil, the song reflects inner conflict, self-doubt, and the burden of fighting for what you believe in. Repeating and even negating the word “justice,” the lyrics mirror the struggle between truth and survival.

Looking Ahead to the Stage

The band filmed the music video inside a quarry cave, recreating the anime’s transformation sequences with dramatic visuals. Later this summer, BAND-MAID will bring What is justice? to the stage at Summer Sonic Bangkok 2025, marking their first live performance in Thailand. Excited to connect with fans abroad once again, the group says they’re ready to showcase the full force of their sound.
