The actor-director only ever wanted ‘Lola’ to be an AE86, and this one is built to perform its own stunts.
Meet Lola, the AE86 Hero
Sung Kang’s upcoming feature film, Drifter, tells the story of an underdog discovering his passion for drifting at a local race circuit. Central to the film is the hero car, Lola — a Toyota AE86 that embodies style, performance, and nostalgia.
Kang, who also directs, insisted that the hero car had to be an AE86. Known in the U.S. as the Corolla, this Rocket Bunny widebody-converted Hachiroku is built to perform its own stunts while staying true to the cult-classic silhouette cherished by drift enthusiasts.
A Legendary Drifting Icon
The AE86 has earned legendary status in automotive culture, partly thanks to the iconic anime Initial D, where the main character famously drove a Trueno. Its front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and adaptability to modifications make it a favorite among drift fans worldwide. With Lola, Drifter pays homage to that legacy while delivering a film-ready machine capable of high-speed precision and unforgettable cinematic moments.
