Blurring the line between concept art and everyday driving, this tribute turns a design philosophy into a moving object.
Mercedes AMG Translates a Concept Into Reality
Mercedes-Benz AMG has created a one of one version of the Mercedes G63 AMG as a tribute to the late Virgil Abloh and his influential “Project Geländewagen.”
Originally introduced in 2020 as a radical, stripped back concept, the project reimagined the G Class as a raw, race inspired object. Now, that same energy has been translated into a fully functional, street legal vehicle.
A Paint Job That Looks Unfinished by Design
What immediately sets this G63 apart is its exterior. At first glance, the SUV appears incomplete, as if it is still in the middle of production.
In reality, the distressed finish is a highly detailed factory paint job designed to mimic sanded panels and exposed surfaces. This deliberate illusion reflects Abloh’s signature approach of presenting work in progress aesthetics as final design, turning imperfection into intention.
Built for the Streets That Shaped Abloh
Unlike the original concept, which removed key functional elements in favor of artistic expression, this version was designed to be driven daily.
The car is closely tied to Chicago, the city where Abloh studied architecture and began shaping his creative identity. In that sense, the vehicle becomes more than a tribute piece. It acts as a moving reflection of his belief that architecture, fashion, and industrial design can exist in the same conversation.
A Permanent Piece of Automotive Culture
Despite its undeniable appeal, this one of one creation will never hit the market. The vehicle remains part of Abloh’s personal legacy, preserved rather than sold.
By transforming an experimental concept into a real world machine, Mercedes AMG has created something rare. Not just a collector’s item, but a lasting symbol of how Virgil Abloh reshaped the language of design across industries.
