There’s a peculiar mercy in letting a show end on its own terms. After three seasons of Ted Lasso, Apple TV+ made the unconventional choice to greenlight a fourth, which landed August 5 with Jason Sudeikis back in the titular coach role alongside the show’s Emmy-winning ensemble. That alone feels like a small victory in an industry that routinely buries beloved properties the moment their metrics dip below some algorithm’s threshold.
The return matters precisely because it shouldn’t have happened. Prestige comedy drops have become streaming’s version of limited-edition sneaker drops: manufactured scarcity dressed up as artistic vision. Yet here’s a show that could have milked “we ended on a high note” for eternity, choosing instead to let its characters breathe another season. The cast, including Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein, both carrying Emmy wins from their roles, didn’t need to show up for another round. The narrative didn’t require it. But they did anyway, which suggests either genuine belief in the story or a negotiation that actually favored the talent. Either way, it’s a rarity worth noting.
Ted Lasso built itself on earnestness in an era of irony, on belief in transformation when cynicism felt safer. Its return isn’t about proving the show still has gas in the tank. By season four, audiences already know what they’re getting: a workplace comedy with teeth, character work that actually lands, and a willingness to let people change without making it corny. Whether that formula still registers with viewers fatigued by endless streaming content is a separate question. What’s interesting is that Apple let it try.
