A special showcase in Los Angeles blends new work, exclusive prints, and art historical dialogue.
A Celebration Across Gallery and Shop
Takashi Murakami is being honored at The Broad in Downtown Los Angeles with a birthday focused showcase that spans both the museum’s galleries and its retail space. Timed with the museum’s ongoing anniversary celebrations, the presentation highlights Murakami’s continued influence on contemporary visual culture while offering fans a closer look at new and exclusive works.
Bridging Superflat and Ukiyo e Traditions
At the heart of the showcase is a major new acquisition titled Hiroshige’s 100 Famous Views of Edo Japonisme Reconsidered Moon Pine Ueno. Created between 2024 and 2025, the work draws a direct connection between Murakami’s Superflat theory and the legacy of Japanese Ukiyo e master Utagawa Hiroshige. The piece places Murakami’s iconic smiling flowers into conversation with historical imagery, emphasizing continuity between past and present.
