The limited collection blends American baseball culture with centuries old Japanese craftsmanship.
A Collaboration Rooted in Craft and Culture
New Era has partnered with Japanese artisan community SASHIKO GALS to release a limited collection of MLB caps that combine global sportswear with traditional hand craftsmanship. The project brings together the recognizable design of American baseball hats with the historic Japanese stitching technique known as sashiko.
For the collaboration, SASHIKO GALS reimagined three iconic teams including the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. Each cap is carefully hand stitched using the traditional sashiko method, a decorative and functional style of stitching that originated in rural Japan more than 400 years ago.
Traditional Sashiko Technique Meets Modern Streetwear
Sashiko was originally developed as a practical technique used to reinforce worn garments so they could last for generations. The stitching often features white thread placed over indigo fabric, creating geometric patterns that are now widely admired in fashion, art and design.
In this collection, artisans carefully stitch each cap by hand, making every piece unique. Because of the handmade process, no two hats are exactly the same, turning each item into a wearable piece of art that reflects the individuality of its maker.
Honoring Resilience and Community
The collaboration also carries a deeper meaning tied to the history of the Otsuchi community in Japan. SASHIKO GALS was officially founded in 2024, but the project grew out of the Otsuchi Sashiko Project, which began as part of recovery efforts after the devastating 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.
Releasing in 2026, the New Era collection marks the fifteenth anniversary of the disaster while celebrating the strength and creativity of the artisans who continue to keep the tradition alive. The limited edition caps are scheduled to release through New Era on March 18.
