Fairmont New Orleans Opens as Brand’s 100th Hotel, Marking Grand Return After 20 Years Away

Fairmont New Orleans Opens as Brand's 100th Hotel, Marking Grand Return After 20 Years Away

Fairmont New Orleans: The luxury chain reclaims its place in the Crescent City with a 250-room landmark that transforms a 1970s banking icon into a destination anchored by Emeril Lagasse’s kitchen.

On November 2, 2026, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts flipped the keys to Fairmont New Orleans, and the math alone tells you this is no ordinary hotel opening. This property isn’t just a return to a city the brand abandoned two decades ago. It’s Fairmont’s 100th hotel globally, a milestone that lands in one of America’s most storied hospitality capitals.

The 250-room property occupies 17 stories of the former Bank of New Orleans building, a 31-story Skidmore, Owings & Merrill landmark from 1970 that sits in the Central Business District, walking distance from the French Quarter and steps from Caesars Superdome. Developed by Kailas Companies and operated by Fairmont, the hotel recycles one of the city’s most recognizable brutalist structures, restoring the original sidewalks, entry canopy, lobby floors, decorative bronze paneling, and local cypress ceiling that had defined the building’s first two stories.

Fairmont New Orleans: A 1970s Dream Reimagined

Rather than cling to the colonial romance of the French Quarter, Rockwell Group’s interior design draws from the glamour and optimism of the 1970s oil boom era, an often-overlooked chapter in New Orleans’ architectural story. The lobby functions as the hotel’s cultural living room, anchored by a mirror-clad monumental staircase reflecting a three-story magnolia flower and Spanish moss-inspired chandelier. The check-in and concierge desks are framed by custom brass relief panels from Italy, while the Lobby Bar pairs handmade Italian lava-stone tiles with a floor mosaic of six marbles in a distinctly 1970s pattern. Layered textures, saturated color, local flora, and globally influenced patterns balance old with new, polished with playful, vibrant with restful.

The Lobby Bar pairs this visual language with a cocktail-focused beverage program and live entertainment designed to draw both guests and New Orleanians into the space from day into evening, turning the hotel into more than a place to sleep.

Emeril Lagasse Anchors the Dining Program

Destination dining comes courtesy of Chef Emeril Lagasse and The Emeril Group, positioning the hotel’s restaurants as a draw for the city’s food-obsessed culture. The partnership signals that Fairmont sees Lagasse as synonymous with New Orleans’ culinary identity, not just a celebrity name on a menu.

Space for Connection

Beyond rooms and dining, the hotel contains more than 19,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a footprint that reflects how Fairmont is positioning New Orleans as a venue for conferences, galas, and the kinds of high-spending gatherings that luxury chains depend on. For a city built on celebration and gathering, that infrastructure amounts to an invitation.

In a statement, Omer Acar, CEO of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, called the opening “a moment of perfect alignment,” framing New Orleans as the ideal stage for a 100-hotel milestone. “After two decades away, returning to New Orleans feels like a joyful homecoming,” he said, emphasizing the brand’s intent to position the hotel as a “vibrant social epicenter” that fuses heritage with contemporary energy.

The Fairmont name vanished from New Orleans two decades ago. Now, anchored in a landmark 1970s structure, celebrated through a design vocabulary that honors rather than erases that era, and powered by one of the country’s most recognizable chef names, it’s back. Whether the city’s travelers and locals treat it as a genuine homecoming or a corporate reclamation remains to be seen.
