Awake NY Swaps the 5 for the 6, and Summer Just Got Louder

Awake NY Swaps the 5 for the 6

Angelo Baque’s NYC streetwear imprint follows its breakout Jordan collaboration with a two-colorway Air Jordan 6 drop anchored by a playful pink that trades sneakerhead restraint for pure statement.

If you caught Awake NY’s Air Jordan 5 collab last year, you already know Angelo Baque doesn’t do quiet. The Brooklyn-based designer’s follow-up with Jordan Brand pivots to the championship-era 6, arriving in two distinct colorways this week, with the pink iteration stealing the narrative oxygen. It’s the kind of move that separates designers who understand the brand’s history from those just chasing hype.

The timing matters. The Air Jordan 6 isn’t just another silhouette in the canon. It’s the shoe Michael wore when he closed out the ’98 Finals against Utah, the last dance before the first retirement. Collaborators typically treat it with archival reverence. Baque’s approach is different. The pink colorway in particular reads less like a homage and more like a reclamation, positioning the shoe as something contemporary and unapologetically bold rather than a museum piece.

The rollout starts with a Jordan Brand Park Jam event, which matters tactically. Park Jams are where Jordan Brand tests cultural temperature in real time, surrounded by community and competition rather than sitting behind a sneaker shop counter. It signals Awake NY isn’t treating this as a standard retail moment but as a cultural statement. For a New York brand working with an Ohio-born corporation, that distinction carries weight.

The real detail nobody’s discussing yet: following up a legitimate breakthrough collab with something this visually confident is harder than it looks. Baque could’ve played it safe, leaned on the goodwill from the 5, and delivered something middle-of-the-road. Instead, the pink variant exists in that narrow space where commercial appeal and creative risk actually overlap. That’s the move of a designer thinking three seasons ahead, not just next Friday’s drop.
