Uncommon turns the Hermès Birkin into an unreachable prize in a claw machine installation called PAIN.
A Metaphor for the Hustle
Landing in SoHo during New York Fashion Week, the surreal claw machine houses a single Hermès Birkin bag — yet the prize is impossible to win. The installation, titled PAIN, reflects the rigged nature of hustle culture in New York City. With the bag always just out of reach, the project captures the grind, irony, and existential crisis of chasing success in the city that never sleeps.
More Than a Game
Uncommon’s installation speaks to the struggles of living in NYC today, where high costs and fierce competition often make opportunity feel unattainable. While visitors can’t win the coveted Birkin, they can purchase tees, totes, hats, keychains, and stickers on-site and online. The tongue-in-cheek merch drop drives home the commentary: the dream remains elusive, but souvenirs are available.
Uncommon’s Ongoing Provocations
The PAIN project follows Uncommon’s viral Ratboot drop of 2024 and a series of experimental works, from feature films to architectural collaborations. Known for sharp cultural critique and irony, the studio continues to blur the lines between fashion, art, and social commentary. PAIN will be open September 13–14 at 416 W Broadway in SoHo, inviting the public to step into the spectacle.
